To be admitted to the Economics major, students must have completed ECON 0100 (formerly 001) and 0200 (formerly 002) or have taken ECON 2100 [formerly 101], and they must have completed MATH 1400 (formerly 104) or 1070 and 1410 (formerly 114) or 1510 (formerly 115) or 1080 with a minimum combined GPA of 2.0. Transfer students additionally must have a grade in at least 1 ECON course taken at Penn.
The calculus prerequisite for the major and for economics 2100, 2200, and the upper level courses is one year of calculus equivalent to Math 1070/1080 or 1400/1410 or 1400/1510. The department recommends taking the 1070/1080 sequence.
The introductory courses (ECON 0100 and 0200) do not have a calculus prerequisite. They can be taken concurrently with or prior to the calculus classes.
All intermediate-level and advanced economics courses for the major require MATH 1400 or 1070 and MATH 1410 or 1510 or 1080 as prerequisites.
If a student receives a grade of at least A- in BEPP 1000 (formerly ECON 010), then BEPP 1000 can be used to satisfy the economics prerequisites for ECON 2100.
Students wishing to declare an Economics Major should fill out the appropriate form. If you have questions about the major requirements, you may contact Emily Romanello, the Undergraduate Coordinator. Once admitted to the major, an Economics advisor is assigned to assist in the selection of courses and to advise on any questions related to the major.
When a student declares an Economics Major, the student will be automatically registered on the department major electronic mailing list. This list will be used periodically for notices and events from the Department and the Undergraduate Economics Society.
