Ph.D. in Economics and Master of Applied Economics and Data Science (MAEDS) Graduate Programs
The economics program at Penn offers two graduate degrees - a Ph.D. program and a professional masters program called MAEDS (Master of Applied Economics and Data Science).
The Ph.D. program is administered by the Graduate Group in Economics, which consists of the faculty of the Department of Economics, and some of its secondary appointments in the Wharton School and the School of Arts and Sciences. The program trains students to conduct outstanding research in economics. All major areas of economics are covered, with particular strengths in theoretical and empirical microeconomics and in modern macroeconomics. Graduates of the program obtain positions at leading universities, research institutions, and government agencies around the world.
Students in this program acquire a thorough knowledge of economic theory and econometric methods before they begin their own research. They meet a series of requirements during their first years in the program, and thereafter devote most of their time to the writing of a dissertation. The median length of time required for completion is 5.5 years. Almost all students are supported by combinations of fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships during at least their first five years of study.
The Master of Applied Economics and Data Science (MAEDS) is a professional degree program. This full-time, on-campus degree, which consists of twelve courses including a capstone course, can usually be completed in 1.5 years. This program provides students with rigorous training in economic modeling and quantitative data analysis, preparing graduates to enter the workforce with a practical understanding of the complexities of current economic issues combined with the tools and knowledge to address those issues and succeed in their data-analytic careers. Learning cutting-edge techniques with Penn's economics experts can also provide a bridge to advanced graduate studies.
We also offer undergraduates the opportunity to submatriculate into the MAEDS program in their senior year.
We look forward to receiving your applications to our program this fall. Applicants are accepted only for full-time work towards the Ph.D. and MAEDS degrees. The application system for Fall 2026 is expected to open on October 1, 2025.
