Qualifying for Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is available for ECON and MAEC majors.

  • For summer internships, please see here for the College guidelines.  Please make sure that the submitted documents satisfy the following requirements:
    • Offer letter: According to the College of Arts and Sciences, the offer letter must comply with the instructions on the ISSS website and must contain the following paragraph:

"We [the employer] offer this internship/practicum experience to you in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania, and it is intended in part to contribute to an independent study that you will conduct under the supervision of faculty in your major program of studies."

Moreover, the offer letter should contain a description of tasks that you are performing. From this description, it should be clear that the internship is related to the economics major. Many employers send out standardized offer letters that focus on the terms of employment without providing a detailed job description. If you receive a generic offer letter, please ask the employer for an addendum that provides more details on the tasks and contains the aforementioned sentence.

    • Major form: please provide a description of the tasks that you will perform in the internship and how these tasks relate to the Econ or Math Econ major in general or to specific courses that you have taken as part of your major.

If you submit documents that do not meet these requirements, they will be returned for revision.

  • For fall and spring internships, please see the department guidelines.
