Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have been around for a long time, historically in the form of tokens, Jesús Fernández-Villaverde of the School of Arts and Sciences tells Omnia. Though technologies and uses have evolved, some aspects remained unchanged. “Soccer cards worked as currency when I was in second grade,” he says. “At the very fundamental level, there is nothing different between the cards that I used to pay for an ice cream and a piece of cryptocurrency.”
